Errata

As of September 14, 2023:
  • Due to unfortunate printing errors in the first printing of this textbook, three line art figures were only partially printed: Figure 3.9 (p. 62), Figure 3.23 (all three parts, p. 77), and Figure 3.24 Left (p. 79). The correct versions are available here and in the Chapter 3 presentation slides. All three figures are various representations of the celestial sphere illustrating different behaviors of the sky at varying latitudes. Only the hard cover and paperback versions of the text are affected; the figures in the electronic version are correct.
  • p. 162, Example 5.2: \(\small(1023\text{ m}/\text{s})^2 = 1.054 \times 10^6\text{ m}^2/\text{s}^2\) in the numerator of the \(\small a_c\) equation. The final result is correct to the accuracy presented.
  • p. 191, Fig. 6.10: This widely used sketch is not of Reverend John Michell. It is actually a sketch of John Mitchel as evidenced by his accompanying signature; see for example, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Mitchel. There do not appear to be any surviving images of John Michell.
  • p. 240, Fig. 7.4: The caption should start with Top: rather than Top Left:
  • p. 406, Fig. 11.41: In caption, “Chapter” is misspelled.
  • p. 429, Fig. 11.75: metallic is misspelled.
  • p. 432, Fig. 11.78: In caption: “Division” is misspelled.
  • p. 432, Last paragraph, sentence five: “As of December, 2022, the population was over 8 billion, nearly tripling in sixty-seven years,…”
  • p. 472, Fig. 12.13: An associated video is available on the Chapter 12 resources web page.
  • p. 478, Table 12.2: The listed semimajor axes (\(R_\text{planet})\) are incorrect (except for the Moon):
    • For Io: 5.91
    • For Europa: 9.40
    • For Ganymede: 14.97
    • For Callisto: 26.33
    • For Titan: 20.27
    • For Triton: 14.33
  • p. 589: Sections 15.5 and 15.6 are in the wrong order in the chapter-opening table of contents
  • p. 647, Fig. 16.14: The widths of the “Protostar/HH object and dusty cocoon”, the “Pre-main sequence”, and the “Main sequence” should more appropriately be labeled in terms of the Sun’s diameter as, \(\text{10,000}\ \text{D}_\text{Sun}\), \(\text{5}\ \text{D}_\text{Sun}\), and \(\text{1}\ \text{D}_\text{Sun}\), respectively.
  • p. 677, Fig. 16.37: Sentence four should read “Closer looks at the Pleiades and M67 are…”. Additionally, the stray “and M67” below the caption should be deleted.
  • p. 706, Fig. 17.23: In the caption, the second sentence should state “upper left” rather than “lower left”.
  • p. 784, Fig. 19.9: The citation listed in the caption is incorrect. The citation should read “Nokia Corporation and AT&T Archives.” The author regrets the error.
