Chapter 9: First Sunspot Observed by the Inouye Solar Telescope

The National Science Foundation’s Inouye Solar Telescope is located near the summit of Haleakalā in Maui, Hawaiʻi. On 28 January 2020, researchers used the 2k × 2k Wave Front Correction (WFC) context viewer camera at the wavelength of 530 nm to observe the first sunspot. The short movie compresses about 100 seconds of solar time into just a few seconds to highlight the significant evolution of small-scale structures known as penumbral grains and umbral dots.
